SEWANEE, Tenn. (WSMV) — A sorority at The University of the South has been suspended over allegations of hiding new members and “abusive treatment.”
local news 3 reported According to the university, Theta Kappa Phi, or TKP, was suspended “for at least a year” over an incident that occurred on the university’s Shake Day earlier this year. Greek Life website.
According to the university’s website, new sorority members are required to put color and glitter on their faces and then are pressured to drink alcohol on the university’s Shake Day, the day new members find out which sorority or The community is accepted.
“During Shake Day, members were seen instructing new members to “chug” and their cups had the word “chug” written on them,” the website read. “During this time, new members were made to wear yellow rubber gloves, baby bibs and other unusual items with the phrase “Teecup” painted on their bodies.
According to the decision issued by the university, Sore has a history of such behavior “going back many years.”
The university wrote in its decision, “Information collected during this conduct case indicates that most of these events and practices are incorporated into the organization’s culture and values, some of which are considered formal traditions of the organization.” “The presence of high-risk alcohol use, abusive and abusive behavior of new members, and disregard for university policies put the physical and emotional well-being of members at risk.”
The sorority will be able to apply for its return for the fall semester of 2023.
The organization will in the meantime undertake a number of rehabilitation works, including updates to its bylaws and a workshop focused on membership requirements and interactions with new members.
