The Rise of a “Dog Library” in a Minneapolis Neighborhood in Memory of Beloved Pets

Minneapolis —In northeast Minneapolis, a creative project is turning heads, and causing a lot of tail wag.

This weekend a “dog library” was set up on Wilson Street, so people could share old dog items or pick up what they needed.

The library is full of treats, toys, leash, bags and has a water bowl.

“My neighbors came to me with a small bouquet when I lost Charlie two and a half weeks ago,” said Lisa Cronk. “And we started talking about taking things out that we could share with other neighbor dogs.”

This is how the neighbors got the idea. Within just three days, Will Mound used his woodworking skills to create the library, which has become famous in the neighborhood.

Some of his projects include making a “Little Free Library” and Fairy Door. During the pandemic, he wrote messages of positivity and put them up outside his house.

“I was in one of the first rounds of layoffs at the start of the pandemic and it was hard to find work at the time, so I felt like I needed to do something and that was kind of my outlet,” Mound said.

It is not the love of dogs that unites these neighbors – it is the shared loss of losing a dog in the past year or so. A handful of dog names are displayed on dog tags in the library in his honor.

“It’s been nice because, I mean, we’ve all experienced it at the same time, so we were able to support each other a little bit,” Dan Bullemer said.

“It was very personal and very sweet to me to see Charlie’s name out there,” Cronk said.

Mounds hopes that people will come to the library and use it. They also welcome donations.

“There’s a lot out there that’s negative right now, so it’s good to feel like something new,” Mound said.

The Dog Library can be found at Wilson Street Northeast near Lowry Avenue Northeast.
