scheduled tribe. LOUIS (KMOV) – Walls stand up and houses are taking shape at Veterans Community Village in North St. The goal is to keep many veterans in their homes before the cold winter arrives.
“Between Missouri and Illinois, you have about 1,200 known homeless veterans. Since we’re here in the city, we’re on Grand, a half mile from the VA Medical Center, on the busiest bus line, we believe our outreach center every year. is going to help thousands of veterans,” said Rebecca Tallman with the Veterans Community Project.
The nonprofit began in Kansas City and is expanding to St. The small village houses at Cass and North Grand are partially complete. The plan is to complete the first phase, which includes 20 homes, by the end of the fall.
They rely heavily on donations and volunteers, such as Eric Kasef, who completed a run from the KC site to the St. Louis site, along with many others. The race was over 300 miles in total.
“We take care of each other, we are one big family and we leave no one behind,” said Casseff, a retired Air Force veteran. The race raised approximately $150,000 for VCP. Each tiny house costs about $50,000 to build.
The homes serve as temporary housing, aimed at relocating veterans to permanent housing.
